Having a terrific idea for a business is only the beginning. Getting that idea from the "drawing board" to production is going to be a long and challenging journey.

The good news is that there are many resources and experienced folks standing by to help in your endeavor. The moment you embrace the simple fact that you’re not on your own, the better off you'll be. Here are some other helpful tips for small business owners and startup founders:

Bank Working Capital

You're going to need money for your startup. There's no way around that. Beyond lining up investors to back your business plan, you also should have some capital in the bank. This might not necessarily be for your business, but for your personal expenses. There will come a time in the initial phase of your start up when you're transitioning from a salaried position to entrepreneur. In other words, you're not going to have a steady paycheck, but you still need to pay the bills. A good starting point would be to have savings for at least four to six months of personal expenses. A decent size savings account will also let you float loans to your company to cover a wide range of expenses.

Start Small but Aim Big

Every great business owner has a story about humble beginnings. This is when a handful of employees worked together in "low rent" conditions to get things going. Although you know how big you'd like your business to become, it is not going to start out that way. Start small, working out of a space that won't cost you a lot of money. Your current home, apartment or parent's garage is as good a place as any. You also don't want to hire staff unless you've got a lot of work for them to do and all of that work should be generating income. The goal is to ramp up towards success.

Keep Records of Everything

No matter what, where or how you spend money for your business, there should be a receipt for that. You want to make sure you're keeping clean records of all of your expenditures and income. At the same time you also want to protect you personal assets. This is why it is important to incorporate your business and begin to run all your expenses through that entity. It's not a lot of money to set up a corporation and it will certainly pay for itself many times over.

Get a Plan of Action

You need a business plan. This can be a multi-page document or a graphic laden power point presentation. Either way it will become your road map towards success. That doesn't mean you have to strictly adhere to that business plan. You're going to make adjustments all along the way. However, with a well thought out business plan you'll be able to appreciate the trajectory of your business. That is also something your investors are going to embrace.

How to Protect Your Idea without Using a Patent

Taking your idea from the drawing board to the store shelf is going to take many months (or, in some cases, years!) of dedicated work. During that development process, someone could swoop in and steal your idea right out from under you.

At least that might be your biggest fear.

This is why you want to make sure your product or idea is patented, right?

Although that may make sense, during the development and start-up phase filing for a patent can be a costly and time-consuming process. So, should you put your great idea on hold?

Absolutely not! Here are some ways you can protect your idea without using a patent.

Non-disclosure agreement (NDA)

If you have any proprietary information or plans that you're going to share, you should make sure you get a non-disclosure agreement signed by that person before you show them anything. This is a binding contract that compels the second party to confidentiality. They can't talk about your product or idea to anyone else without your permission. You can get a lot of work done with a NDA without worrying that your idea will get stolen as it is developed.

Non-compete agreement

This is an agreement you sign with someone you are hiring for your company. It will compel them not to start a competing business that could take direct aim at your profits. For instance, if you've come up with a great new ice cream making process and you share that with your workers they can't turn around and use that same process in their own store if they've signed a non-compete agreement. Of course, if you want to sell them franchises go for it!

Work-for-hire agreement

This is an agreement you'll enter into with a freelance worker who will be lending some of their talents on certain elements of your product development. With a work-for-hire contract, you will own all the work that person creates on your behalf. If they design a killer logo for your brand, under this contract, that logo will be all yours.

Go provisional

Another layer of protecting your idea is by filing a provisional patent. This is something you can do yourself using resources found online. The provisional patent can throw a "protection net" over your idea for up to one year. With this type of patent, you can make the claim of "patent pending." In that year, you should be working out the kinks and lining up investors. Then you can pull the trigger on the patent. You might also find that your product has changed greatly in that year. Better to get it right than to rush into a patent.

The Google Patent Search Tool - Does This Affect Your Intellectual Property?


A patent is all about protection for your intellectual property. The United States provides patents to give inventors the right “to exclude others from making, using, offering for sale, or selling their invention throughout the United States or importing their invention into the United States.”

Every country can grant a patent which would govern that property in that country. It is conceivable that a patent granted in the U.S. or Canada doesn’t necessarily offer protection against infringement in a country like China or Russia.

Still, it is advisable for a business that has a piece of intellectual property to have it patented in as many countries as possible.

When you consider that there are 8 million approved patents and 3 million pending patent applications in the U.S. alone then you can see the need for a search engine. The first obvious benefit of a Google patent search is to see if somebody beat you to the punch. In other words, has your brilliant idea already been developed? This is a search that really should be conducted once the plans for an item are ready to go to the prototype stage. If you find that your idea has been patented you’ll either have to rethink it entirely or scrape the project. Better to learn that in the early stages of development.

Borrowing Innovations

Suppose you’re in the kind of business that needs to create a machine to make the perfect widget. You’re really selling the widget but it has to be mass produced to be cost effective. That special machine you design to make the widget could be patented. However, you might find that another business has a similar machine you can adapt. There’s no need to go down the expensive patent review process when you can license the right to use that technology from the original patent holder. Remember, you want to get to your “widget” and the most affordable and stress free path to that goal is the way to go.

There aren’t a lot of secrets when it comes to granting a patent. If you’re working through a challenging design you might do a patent search for similar products to see how other inventors overcame their hurdles. Who knows? 1.      Define Your Goal and Vision

Saying you want to be your own boss is a good motivating factor but how are you going to get there? You need to define your goal in terms of a business plan. 2.      Keep It Real

The key is to pick a specific goal that you can follow. To say, “I want to make a million dollars profit in my first year,” is not realistic no matter what the business. You might want to own your own restaurant but perhaps it makes better sense to start a small diner and build a clientele. Less overhead and more room for “learning curves.”

If you’re planning to start a business that you’re already familiar with then you should have a solid foundation of how that business works. However, that doesn’t mean you know everything about running that business. You might be adept at sales but how are you at bookkeeping or payroll or property leases? Those are all areas you’ll have to become familiar with as your business expands. To accomplish that it might make sense to learn the ropes either through college courses or working with a mentor.

4.      Take the Leap

Sooner or later all of your dreaming has got to come down to earth, so to speak. This means you have to actually begin to implement your plans. If you have a well thought out business plan then you’ll be using that as a kind of road map for this journey. There will be bumps along the way but at least you’ll be headed in the right direction.

What Is The Biggest Threat To Your Creativity?


 
The biggest threat to your creativity could be staring you right in the face. The mere fact that you might be researching this topic means you’re stuck! It might be that the creative block hindering your productivity could come down to your attitude. If you consider the very act of “being creative” as a chore or something you dread, then you’re setting up a pattern of self-defeat before you even begin. That’s not being productive or creative. Here are some other things to consider that will help spark your creative flow:

Change Your Perspective

Try sitting in your guest chair for an hour while doing your work. Swap out the photos or art work hanging on your wall. Sometimes changing perspective can be enough to spark a creative idea. Even the smallest change can make a difference. If you have the chance to grab your laptop and head outdoors to the nearest java joint, go for it. There’s no telling what you might run into or meet up with that could help you rethink a problem and come up with a creative solution.

Change Your Chair

If you’re spending eight hours in an uncomfortable chair it’s no wonder you can’t be creative. Constantly adjusting your posture to find the perfect position is a distraction. That distraction can set off a chain reaction. If your chair is uncomfortable then it’s too hot or too cold in the office. Your shoes are too tight. You don’t like what you’re wearing. It goes on and on. Stop those kinds of distractions in their track and start by being comfortable in your chair. By the same token, don’t always sit in the same chair during conference room meetings. Mix it up and see what happens.

Change Your Office Space

There might be an unused area in your office that would make a great “think tank.” Bring in a couple of comfy sofas and chairs and let this be a break space that gives you and your coworkers a chance to get out and move around. This could also be a great place to share idea and get feedback.

Take a Break

We’re not talking about going for a cup of coffee or slice of birthday cake. Instead, think of ways to take an inspiration break. Is there a piece of music that always puts you in a good frame of mind? Is there a favorite writer who always gets you thinking? Load up some quotes or your favorite book in your iPad. Then schedule time to put your work aside and look from inspiration from those sources.

Write Everything Down

The only bad idea is no idea. You sometimes have to get through the dozen clunkers before finding that gem. That’s why when you’re brainstorming you should write everything down. Doesn’t matter if it’s a pad, a dry erase board or even a digital recorder - get it on record for future consideration.

How To Find Your Next Great Business Idea

One of the biggest struggles that potential entrepreneurs face is trying to understand what kind of business that they should start. For many, the process in finding an idea can be long and challenging, even harder than writing a business plan! Deciding on what opportunity to pursue is dependent on variables such as:

·     If there is a “pain” that you can solve and if people are willing to pay for the solution;

·         How much money you have;

·         Whether you want to sell products or be a service-oriented business;

·         Whether you want to build a lifestyle small business or a million-dollar conglomerate.

 Here are some tips for a fast and successful search in identifying different business opportunities.

Find a solution

By keeping your eyes (and ears!) open, you will stumble upon opportunities to solve problems that may lead you to the perfect idea. Ask yourself - what pains or frustrations do people experience in their daily lives? Are there any challenges that people are complaining about? If there are, work on finding the solution as every problem is an opportunity for you to solve.

Carry a small notebook with you and note down anything you hear or see in regards to people’s frustrations. When you have filled out a page or two, try to find a solution to them. Are there companies that are solving those needs well? If not, how can you do it? What would be the ideal situation in solving that problem? And finally, can it be profitable?

Remember, if the “pain” is perceived as big and causes a lot of time and money to be wasted, people are willing to pay more to get it solved quickly.

Use your passion and knowledge

Another area you can draw ideas from is within yourself. What are your strengths, skills, knowledge and experience that you have which can be of benefit to others? What are the things that you naturally share with your friends that they turn to you for? Is there a challenge that you’ve successfully overcome?

Take for example, if you’ve successfully lost weight using natural methods after trying different kinds of therapies and diets, do you think millions of people would benefit from your experience? Of course! We often take what we know for granted and don’t realize how valuable our knowledge can be if shared with others. Don’t forget there are so many people you can help with your knowledge.

Set yourself apart! How can you do things differently?

There has always been a misconception that to be an entrepreneur, you must start a business that is very innovative and not found elsewhere. Business ideas need not to be very different or entirely unique to be successful. Innovation in a new business can be creating a new technique, process or even a brand.  You can target a new market or try a new marketing channel that may give you an edge over your competitors.

Analyze various companies that are in your chosen industry. Do their brands look and feel the same? Take a look at how good they are at delivering value to their customers and see if you can provide it more efficiently or better. 

Take advantage of changing trends

Pay attention to any changes that you notice in your industry or target markets and try to spot trends you can turn into new businesses. The first companies to identify an emerging trend and execute quickly often become the market leader in their industry.    

A great example is Facebook. Although they weren’t the first on the market, they were innovative and took advantage of trends to make it easy for people to communicate with each other. Facebook grew from a small site in Harvard to being the most visited website after Google. Because of Facebook, social media has become a game changer for a lot of companies and startups have sprouted that specifically target the new industry. By keeping your finger on the pulse of your target market, you will be able to foresee trends and take advantage of them long before they appear.

Regardless of what your goals are for your business, keep in mind that even if you have a million-dollar idea, it means nothing without proper execution. Tips on How to Generate a Great Business Idea


There are some that say that business ideas are a dime a dozen. The real challenge is finding a business idea which can translate into success and profit. Even a professional think tank whose sole mission is to create great ideas don't always hit them out of the park every time. Coming up with a great business idea is really a matter of trial and error. The most powerful lesson you can learn could be from your failures. The following are some helpful hints that can allow you to develop a proactive approach towards generating great business ideas.

·         Listen hard: A lot of the great business ideas come from a source that is available to everyone and that is listening to what other people have to say. This doesn't necessarily mean conducting surveys asking the question, "What's the one thing you need that would make your life better?" Instead it could mean just being aware of the people around you are saying. Take the occasional ride on the subway or bus and listen in on conversations between workers. Take lunch outdoors by yourself surrounded by an other workers to hear what they have to say. Is this eavesdropping? Of course it is but as long as you're in a public place you’re not breaking any laws by listening in on a conversation that someone is having right next to you.


·         Write it Down: There’s no telling where or when that next great idea might come from. You could be woken up in the middle the night with inspiration or find it sitting in a traffic jam. The important thing is not to let that idea escape. If you don't have access to a notepad and pen there are plenty of cell phone apps which allow you to dictate a random thought. At the end of the day or week go over your notes or record of memos and see if there's anything worth developing.


·         Walk Away: During the brainstorming process you could be put yourself under some self imposed pressure. If you say, "I have to come up with a great idea by five o'clock today", there's a very good chance you won't come up with any idea! If thinking about a project has you hitting the proverbial brick wall then get up from your chair and go for a walk. Take a shower. Go shopping. Do anything that will give your brain a rest and allow other sensory inputs to flow in. Once you clear out the stress you could discover that you're now free to create.


·         Don't Hesitate to "Borrow": The famous writer Tolstoy once said that every story idea is either a stranger that comes to town or a man embarking on a journey. If that is true, then every storyteller has essentially borrowed from every other storyteller; it's just a matter of putting your own spin on a variation of a theme. That same principle can be applied to generating a great business idea. Check out what the competition is up to. Maybe you could be doing the same thing only better. This kind of research could also inspire you to go off into an entirely different direction. Great business ideas don't happen in a vacuum.
