Finding New Ways To Network

Finding new clients and attracting new customers doesn’t have to be all about advertising your business. Sometimes it’s about selling yourself through networking. But networking events tend to get a bad rap – most people don’t look forward to boring business events full of schmoozing and faking interest in others. But attending those awful local events isn’t the only way to network. If you cringe when you hear the mention of “networking”, why not try a new way to create business relationships?

Start a Meetup

Networking events are said to be the best way to meet new contacts and create business relationships. With so many to choose from, it can be hard to know which will be most beneficial to your needs. So why not start your own? Create your own event and send invites on social media to reach out to people you already know and ask those people to pass along the invite to others who might be interested. Make sure you find an open and comfortable space and have refreshments available to make your event feel friendly and welcoming. As the host, you’ll be responsible for making your event is successful so go out of your way to introduce yourself to as many people as possible and ask lots of questions (while networking the whole time)! Starting your own meetup allows you to create the ideal networking event – not the stuffy boring kind that everyone dreads! If you’d rather do something informal, try starting a book club or a wine tasting event. This will provide a more intimate environment for discussion and, with the right group, can turn into potential relationship building in the future.

Find a Volunteer Opportunity

Not only does volunteer work give you a feeling of great satisfaction, it’s a fantastic way to meet like-minded individuals who are looking to give back to the community. Being in a group who are passionate about volunteering can really bring people together and eventually forge close bonds. There’s a sense of trust established as people are working towards a greater good. Another way to volunteer and get your work noticed is to offer your services for free to a non-profit.

Have Your Business Card Handy


You never know when you’ll run into someone who could become a potential client, so always have your business cards ready to hand out. If a casual conversation at a pub turns to work related discussion, providing a business card with your answer to “what do you do?” can turn a chance meeting into a future business venture. The business card might get tucked away, but is a good reminder for when services might be needed later or it can be passed along to a friend. To make a larger impact, splurge on an interesting and creative design for your cards as a statement piece.

Strengthen Your Existing Connections

Sometimes it can be hard to find the time to keep in touch with co-workers, employees, or clients from the past. But reaching out every once in a while is a great way to keep your name (and business) top of mind. A simple email to catch up or even a social media message keeps the relationship even after years have passed. LinkedIn provides a great way to keep contact information of those you’ve worked with in the past, and makes it easy to find those you may have lost contact with. You’ll also have an easier time meeting new contacts simply through keeping up with your old ones. Now that’s networking!

Starting Your Business with a Clean Slate

Breaking up is hard to do. That's true for relationships and also for ending your contract with an employer.

Whether you're moving on to start your own business or have been hired at a company that could be considered a competitor, you'll want to make sure you can start your new job with a clean slate.

A lot of the following issues might be covered in your employee contract. It's worth discussing with an experienced lawyer to make sure you can get up and running without a potential lawsuit slowing you down. 

Here's what to look out for:

Intellectual Property

It is obvious that anything you created or invented during work hours for your company is owned by that company. This would be considered intellectual property. Where it gets fuzzy is any work you did on the side during off hours. Things could be further complicated if you used any type of company equipment like a computer or software for your own inventions. There could be a strong claim for that property you created.

Non-Competition

It stands to reason that if you're good at your current job, then your start-up would be related to your skill set. That might be cause for concern if you are going to be in direct competition with your current employer. Most contracts have a non-compete clause that can last up to a year. It might take that long to line up your investors and launch your business but you'll you might be restricted from doing any kind of work that is deemed "the competition." Worst-case scenario, you sit out the year and spend it planning.

Non-Solicitation

This is often referred to as the "poaching clause." Just because you've created solid working relationships with a lot of clients doesn't mean you can "steal" them all for your new business. It's a tricky area. A client can go to any business they want as long as they don't violate a contract. The mere fact that you're starting up on your own might be enough incentive for the client to jump ship. From a legal standpoint you'll be covered if you don't actively solicit that client.

If you have doubts about any of these areas then you'll be better off checking with a lawyer. Additionally, you should consider your future plans when accepting any job. If your goal is to become your own boss then a restrictive employee contract which prevents that from happening might not be worth signing.

There is nothing wrong with negotiating. Just make sure you're not getting trapped into a contract which will stop you from pursuing your dreams.

Lessons for the Entrepreneur

As the old adage goes, "Those who can, do; and those who can't, teach."

This isn't a slam against your professor but, when it comes to business, nothing beats real life experience. There is a lot you can learn by diving into an entrepreneurship that you could never get from a classroom. 

Consider these lessons:

You Are Your Schedule

Show of hands: who has ditched a college class? Everybody, right? It's hard to imagine getting through four years of business school without sleeping in at least once a semester. Out in the real world you won't have that luxury. You'll learn very fast that your work schedule is what will dictate your potential for success. This might mean taking a meeting on a Saturday morning or working into the wee hours to get a project done. You don't have a lot of options because running a business doesn't mean you can get a "do over" test or hand in a paper late.

Say Goodbye to Down Time

There's a reason why Spring Break is so vital to college students: It's an official break. A week without worrying about tests or papers or classes. In your business you can take a vacation, but chances are during that first year of the startup you'll be putting in some serious work hours and vacations will be on hold. This doesn't mean you'll be working around the clock (not all the time at least) but you'll come to value that time you can take off a lot more.

Keep Your Eyes on the Prize

A typical college semester could be filled with a variety of classes. Yes, they're all going for the same degree but you'll be multitasking up a storm as you juggle multiple classes, homework, projects and tests. For your business you'll benefit from those multitasking skills you developed but you'll also learn the value of laser-like focus. Always keep the big goal front and center and learn to delegate.

Go Beyond the Books

As a business major you'll be required to take some basic accounting courses. The key word here is "basic." In your business, you'll be getting a crash course in whole new level of accounting with regard to taxes, payroll, insurance and shelters not to mention maximizing profits and adjusting for losses. That's a lot of numbers to keep track of and no, you won't be graded on a curve.

Business Relationships Trump Frat Buddies

College is a time for fun. It's the first change students have to live on their own and make decisions. Usually that means a lot of parties. Once you've graduated, you'll need to start building business relationships. Some of your fellow classmates might be a benefit in terms of networking connections but it's vital to strike out on your own and create forge new friendships with people who can help your company.

If you're in college now, embrace the good times because it's an upwards climb from here on out!

Obstacles for Female Business Owners


Despite the many advances that women have made in the business world there are still many obstacles standing in their way. This is especially true for the entrepreneur who is starting up her own business. None of these obstacles are insurmountable, but they should be taken into consideration when approaching the idea of starting a business.

1.      Discrimination

You wouldn’t think discrimination against women would still be an issue this far into the 21st century. The fact remains that there are some investors and clients who still might give pause to a woman CEO. In some cases this discrimination can come from other women! This doesn’t mean that deals won’t get done with a woman in charge; it’s just that this entrenched perception is hard to shake. The good news is that the new generation of business professionals aren’t stuck in the past.  

2.      The Boy’s Club

Not every business deal goes down between the hours of 9 to 5. Relationships are fostered in all kinds of social situations like the golf country club or gym. In these cases, men gravitate towards men. It’s easy to imagine that a lot of business can be conducted over the course of 18 holes. Yes, women can play golf too but it’s an area that is dominated by men and unless you can play with the boys you won’t have that kind of direct access to potential new business relationships.

3.      The Family Issue

This is another of those entrenched perception issues. If a woman is a mother of younger children she is expected to make those children a priority. Forget the fact that she has a husband or a nanny; she’s still a “mom.” This is even more difficult to overcome with younger entrepreneurs who might start a family and require maternity leave. The truth is that ever since women have entered the workforce they have been fighting to strike a balance between work and family just as their husbands do. Hopefully, the woman business owner will have that support system in place to insure her success.

4.      Competition and Self-promotion

This is an area that could be more of a stumbling block on the part of women as opposed to an outside perception of them. Often, women have it ingrained in their psyche not to be competitive or to self-promote. However, both of those are important qualities for any successful entrepreneur. It’s important for women to move beyond “that’s how I was raised” and to recognize that the best approach to business is a level playing field. If the guys are going to be competitive, then you should as well. As for self-promotion there is nothing wrong with marketing yourself. Be proud of your accomplishments and share them with the world!

Can LinkedIn Really Help You Get More Business?



If you’re in sales, one of the major challenges that you’ll come across on a regular basis is finding qualified leads. You can buy as many lists as you can from lead brokers, or create time-consuming marketing campaigns, but nothing can beat the effectiveness of LinkedIn’s platform for finding a captive business audience in one spot. Other than being able to use LinkedIn as a tool to find targeted prospects, you can also use it to keep track of your competitors. By creating a profile for both yourself and your company, you can also take advantage of the network to connect with your target audience and drive traffic back to your website.

Making LinkedIn Work For Your Company

As with other type of social media marketing strategies, using LinkedIn to promote your business means you have to keep your profile current and active. Don’t just think that because you set up a LinkedIn profile that your work is done. It would be like going to a business expo and standing in a corner hoping people will come to you. How would they even know you’re in attendance? You’ve got to be proactive by directly reaching out to other businesses and professionals and give them an opportunity to experience what your company has to offer.

Here are some techniques that can help:

1)      Join LinkedIn Groups: A great way to build relationships with your prospects is to join in on the various discussions going on at LinkedIn groups. For instance, if you are involved in import/export, then you can certainly find a group of professionals who are discussing matters that would pertain to your industry. Join groups and get into the game.



2)      Be a subject matter expert: Get involved in LinkedIn Answer forums, especially those related to your industry and your prospects. The LinkedIn Answers forum allows all members to post questions on any business challenges that they are facing. This allows them to take advantage of the platform’s peer-to-peer network, having any member to answer and to respond to questions posted by any other LinkedIn member. There are several advantages to this feature:



i)        It is an excellent way to gather information and to be on the cutting edge of a particular industry or niche.


ii)      It is also a great way to communicate with prospects and potential partners in a particular niche. If you answer questions, you are positioning yourself as a subject matter expert in your industry and people will turn to you for answers.



3)      Connecting your network with each other: Build your social influence by connecting your contacts or members with each other. Working to connect your network with other members on LinkedIn not only helps you become known as an influencer, there also is an ancillary benefit – your network will reciprocate the favour. 

Although LinkedIn isn't the largest social network, it is one that has the most business-oriented membership.  You not only have all your prospects at one spot, but can tap into a peer-to-peer resource that can help you build your business. However, just like offline networking, you have to work at building relationships with your network using the right techniques.

Small Business: How to Create a Good Team


In order for a small business to thrive and survive, productive teamwork is the key. No matter what type of business you are starting up or investing in, building a great team requires strong leadership on your part. It’s not just about hiring the most qualified individual. You have to consider the bigger picture of how those individuals on your staff will work together as a team. In other words, you can’t always put together a group of workers and hope they’ll “figure things out” on their own. Some personalities simply work better together than others. You need to stay on top of your team to see how those dynamics are playing out.

 Here are some helpful hints that can lead you towards building that effective team.

1)      Establish the Goals: What is your definition of success for your business? That should be the goal that everyone on the team is striving for. It can’t just be about “getting through the day” but about expanding and growing. If that means adding to your customer base or your product catalog then your team should be focused on those goals. You should also set obtainable benchmarks to track the progress of achieving those goals. It all comes down to keeping your team’s “eye on the prize.”


2)      Fix Problems Fast: There is no guarantee that your “dream team” is going to get along all the time. Before any conflicts crop up, you should establish the ground rules for how they are to be resolved. This might mean clearly defining the management structure and who on the team will handle complaints. If an issue can’t be resolved quickly, then as the boss you need to step in and get the problem fixed fast. You don’t want a disagreement to be blown out of proportion and cause a distraction to everyone.


3)      Include the Team: This seems like a no-brainer but it’s often easy for one or two staff members in a small business to dominate discussions or meetings. You should strive to be as inclusive as possible of all your team members. A simple approach is to turn a question back onto the team members. Ask someone who doesn’t always speak up how they might handle a particular situation. This will empower everyone to be a more active participant in the business. Nobody should be working “under the radar.”


4)      Reward Hard Work: There are many businesses that use bonuses as a way of inspiring staff members to fulfill their goals. While this is a proven method it might also set up some unwanted competition and create bad feelings among the staff. This is especially true if someone gets a bonus on the back of somebody else’s hard work. Try to find a reward which benefits the entire team like a dinner or happy hour celebration.


5)      Be the Boss: A strong leader takes in the opinion of those around him but ultimately has the final word. You need to establish that in the end you’ll have that final word in your business. This doesn’t mean micromanagement but taking on the major decisions. Often a staff at a small business develops into deep friendships that extend outside of work hours. However, as the boss you need to maintain a certain distance when it comes to those personal relationships. There is no reason why you can’t have fun with your team but always remember they will be looking up to you for leadership. Keep your relationships with your team professional.

Building a Better Work/Life Balance for the Entrepreneur

“There’s just not enough time in the day.”

How often have you said that very thing to yourself? If you are experiencing feelings of being overworked and out of sorts with the rest of your life you’re certainly not alone. Even though modern technology is supposed to improve our lives, it has also caused our lives to accelerate. You get an email from work and it has to be answered ASAP. You work with a company that has global interests and those emails and texts can come in around the clock. Juggling those demands with the demands of an active family or social live can leave you exhausted at the end of every week. You’ll then approach Monday morning with dread. Keep up this pattern and it could have a serious impact on your health and relationships. If you feel as though you’re spinning too fast, it might be time to build a better work/life balance.

Here are some helpful hints that can allow you to achieve that balance:    

Take Control of Your Schedule

It’s easy for a busy exec to plot out their business day. All the meetings, conference calls and other planning sessions that are entered into the calendar, they must be adhered to. But remember, your downtime should be equally important and should be scheduled accordingly! Mark your calendar for an appointment with friends or family and stick to that just as you would with a business meeting. Recognizing that your free time away from work is as equally important to your 9-5 schedule is half the battle of achieving that perfect work/life balance.

Beware of the Energy Vampires

These are those events or people who can best be described as Energy Vampires. In other words, they suck the very life out of you. Maybe it’s a co-worker who constantly complains or gossips. Maybe it’s doing laundry. Whatever the issue find a way to adjust your life. You don’t have to go to lunch with the “work gossip” every day and you can drop off your laundry for fluff and fold. It all comes back to the issue of making your own down time as valuable as it should be. Don’t waste it.

Prioritize Your To-Do List

Along with our work assignments we also have life assignments. These are all the things we need to do outside of the work week to maintain a standard of living. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t be more practical with your own to-do list. Instead of going to the grocery store every day after work, make one list for one shopping trip that will get you through the week. Guess what? There’s an app for that! If your dry cleaner offers delivery take them up on that offer. Need stamps? Buy them online. Find those ways to cut out the nagging errands.

Chill Out

Above all else, don’t devalue the importance of “me time.” Whether that means taking a half hour bath or carving out time to read a few chapters from the current bestseller some of the best balance can be achieved when you give yourself some time alone. Unless you find a positive way to “recharge” your batteries, you won’t be any good at work or at home!

Creating a contract - protecting yourself and your business

In business, a well designed contract protects you from any unknown variables, much like an insurance policy. You pay for the policy, hoping that you’ll never have to use it. More specifically, a contract helps you manage and avoid potential risks. Due to the unpredictability of the business world, smart professionals create contracts to reduce any unnecessary costs and minimize all risks.


Why should you use a contract?

A contract is a legal document used between multiple parties to outline a business relationship. The contract becomes valid only when the parties involved agree to the terms and conditions by signing the document. It should detail the:

• expectations of the stakeholders;

• the relationship between all parties;

• the nature of the transaction;

• and the next steps of the relationship including any recourse in case of disputes.

It is often used for:

• During the hiring of freelancers/vendors/suppliers

• During the purchase of goods or services

• Real estate transactions

• Business partnerships

• Non-compete, non-disclosure or confidentiality agreements

With a contract between parties, all issues can be outlined in detail, thereby avoiding any problems that may happen in the future.

Things to be aware of in creating a contract

Don’t be vague, make sure the contract is detailed – The ideal contracts are detailed and focused. Make sure that the terms and conditions are simple, specific, and that avoids any uncertainty. The more specific you are in your expectations or terms, it becomes very clear on what is to be done by all parties and by what time.

Identify all concerns you have – Make sure that all your concerns are outlined and are answered. You don’t want to find out the hard way in a situation that could have been avoided.

Understand the laws – Make sure that you know your provincial and even local laws that can affect the contract. This is especially true for any real estate transaction where the laws change by province. It is best to consult a lawyer who is knowledgeable about your industry and can advise you on the proper stipulations.

Review the contract with a lawyer - Never sign the contract until you’ve gone over it with a lawyer. Many people make the mistake of only going to the lawyer after the agreement has been signed or when a problem came up.

A contract is meant to be used as a way to protect yourself and facilitate any business transaction. It creates a common platform from where all parties can move forward in consummating a business relationship. It also is used to protect yourself from any harm or legal problems and can be one of the best decisions you’ll make for your business.
